Santam Commercial Cover During Lockdown

To all our valued SANTAM commercial clients !!

As I’m sure that you are all under a lot of pressure at the moment to continue providing your services as well as deal with a proposed reduction in revenue, we have been inundated with questions from all our commercial clients regarding specifically Business Interruption cover and if this will pay-out during this lockdown period. In a nutshell, Business Interruption cover pays out for standing company costs and loss of profits due to the below mentioned perils/events coming into play. It DOES NOT cover losses due to illness/epidemics etc or lockdown periods as a result of this.

This cover can also not be added onto a commercial policy.

I have added extensions onto your Business Interruption cover that would include losses due to the below mentioned perils of any of your major suppliers that could affect your revenue or interruptions of public services to those suppliers due to any of those perils.

The Business Interruption Section provides cover for loss following interruption of or interference with the business in consequence of damage to property caused by perils as described in the schedule.

· Fire;

· Lightning or thunderbolt;

· Explosion;

· Earthquake;

· Weather and water;

· Impact;

· Leakage from any sprinkler, drencher system or fire extinguishing installation/appliance;

· Subsidence and landslip;

· Malicious damage;

· Riot and strike (other than RSA and Namibia);

· Power surge;

· Leakage of oils and chemicals.

SANTAM have committed to providing their full level of services and emergency support during this lockdown period as they are deemed to be an ESSENTIAL SERVICE with regards to assisting with claims and financial losses during this time.

Just a word on laptops as I’m sure most of the staff will be working from home. I have always insured all laptops to be covered at work premises and offsite/home as well. They are covered for all risks. As long as these laptops are locked in the respective houses overnight and not kept in vehicles left out in the open overnight.  

Where possible if desktops could be locked away whilst premises are unoccupied that would go a long way to assisting in a reduction of risk/potential losses.
